Durham’s Award-Winning Mountjoy Teaching and Learning Centre

As a leading national Quality Site Inspector, we provide Quality Site Inspection services to diverse clients across the UK, including a vast amount of Universities which form one of our largest portfolios.

We have had the pleasure of working with Durham University on many of their campus developments, including the spectacular award-winning Mountjoy Teaching and Learning Centre, which features a dynamic roof profile.

Turner & Townsend approached us to provide Clerks of Works services for the build of the centre, with the aim to protect the project from costly mistakes and defects, reduce disruption and down time, and to help to maintain consistent quality and to keep work on-time and on-budget.

The site is located adjacent to a conservation area and within view of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The proximity posed a challenge, due to the high sensitivity, meaning that the overall building was designed to be broken down into an assemblage of eleven smaller sections to relate closely to the historic city.

The three-storey module, with a 15x18m footprint, was established as the building block from which the centre was formed. Each module has two façade types: a ‘fenestrated’ façade generally on the long face, and a ‘gable’ façade to the short face. All have been capped by an asymmetric pyramidal roof with a central rooflight. Twelve of these modules, rotated and handed, create the plan layout and building volume, with one of the central modules being removed to create an atrium courtyard.

This uniquely designed building was successful in winning the Best Public Service or Educational Building at the 2020 LABC Northern Building Excellence Awards.

“The on-site Clerk of Work has been excellent throughout the project and has shown great attention to detail. He is one of the best Clerk of Works that I have worked with and I would certainly recommend his services through Hickton Quality Control.”

Associate Director, Turner & Townsend Project Management, James Marshall

The building offers modern facilities to its students, including: 250 and 500 seat lecture theatres with surrounding teaching spaces, seminar spaces and project rooms, and learning commons with a broad range of settings for focused, contemplative, active and collaborative learning.

We pride ourselves in providing professional Clerk of Works services, to champion quality in construction throughout the UK. To speak to our technical team about a construction project, please contact us on 01226 746959 or visit our website at www.hicktonqualitycontrol.co.uk
