Redevelopment of NUM Headquarters, Sheffield

Sheffield’s City Centre is home to many iconic landmarks such as the Winter Gardens, Kelham Island Museum and The Crucible and Lyceum Theatre to name just a few. With it also being the closest city to our headquarters in Barnsley too, we always become excited when we have the opportunity to apply our skills to high profile projects such as the NUM Headquarters, which is also an iconic building in the City Centre on Holly Street.

Employed directly by McBains – national property and construction consultants, we provided Quality Site inspection services for the former National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) Building in Sheffield city centre, which now stands as a striking commercial project in Sheffield.

The building was constructed in 1987 and was the NUM Headquarters for four years and then stood empty for more than 25 years. The 5.5m renovation scheme, which was funded through a collaboration between CBRE, the Sheffield City Region JESSICA Fund and Sheffield City Council’s Growing Places Fund, has transformed the building into striking new commercial premises for Sheffield.

This is just one of many Sheffield-based projects that our site team has provided Clerks of Works services for but is the first project successfully completed on behalf of McBains, who approached us to get involved to oversee the quality plan, at the beginning of the year.

“NUM Headquarters marks the first project that we have successfully delivered together, and we are hopeful that this is the start of a partnership that will continue to flourish as we work on future projects together. We are also due to start on site imminently on a housing project on the outskirts of London.”
