Rejuvenating West Yorkshire Playhouse, Leeds

We have been working together with appointed long-standing client, Turner & Townsend, on the £15.8m refurbishment of the Leeds Playhouse, creating a better theatre for the people of Leeds. Proud to be a part of the refurbishment, we are providing both Building and M&E Clerks of Works services inspecting the quality workmanship throughout since mid-2018 through to completion which is expected later this year.

Based in Leeds, West Yorkshire, the theatre originally opened in 1990 known as the “West Yorkshire Playhouse” and was rebranded in June 2018 to revert to the title “Leeds Playhouse” upon start of the refurbishment. The Playhouse has a reputation as one of the best producing theatres in the country.

The Playhouse stood for 30 years and needed rejuvenating, with floor to ceiling windows in the new front entrance with colourful ceramic tiles, of which are donated by a local factory, the new Playhouse is set to be a cultural attraction to Leeds full of history. The improvement work gives the theatre a brand new lease of life with the addition of the brand new theatre “Bramall Rock Void”, creating a diverse, flexible space to perform. it will also improve accessibility with two new entrance ways and larger lifts, allowing greater access for wheelchair users.

In addition to this the building will also feature a new restaurant and bar with improved facilities throughout.

“Working with Turner Townsend to help refurbish the much-loved theatre is a local project which our Site Inspectors are pleased to be part of, and we are looking forward to a successful completion later this year.”

Operations Manager, Jon King

In addition to our Clerk of Works services we are also playing our part in supporting the redevelopment further directly with the Leeds Playhouse’s “Build with Us” campaign. Having been delighted to have made a pledge to their £15.8m needed to complete the redevelopment, Hickton will have a commemorative plaque within the building for generations to come.
