The Auckland Project – revitalising Bishop Auckland

It feels like a great honour to be working with The Auckland Project, which is helping to revitalise Bishop Auckland, the former home of the Prince Bishops of Durham, by creating a world-class heritage, arts and faith destination.

The project began as Auckland Castle Trust in 2012 with a vision to transform Auckland Castle, the 900-year-old former palace of the Prince Bishops of Durham, from an unknown private dwelling into an internationally significant destination.

Six years into the vision and The Auckland Project has moved through the Castle gates and into the town, where work is underway to create a world-class visitor destination including a Faith Museum, Spanish Gallery, Walled Garden, Auckland Tower visitor centre, a hotel and a number of restaurants.

Auckland Castle, which will form the centrepiece of the visitor destination, is currently undergoing a multi-million pound programme of conservation to return the property to its former Georgian Gothic splendour.

We were appointed by The Auckland Project in June this year to provide quality site inspection services to oversee the construction work of several elements of the project. In addition, we are also acting as their trusted Client Advisor to make sure that the project runs smoothly.

Our Building and M&E Clerks of Works and our Client Advisor have immediately added value to the project.

‘The Auckland Project is perfect for us. Our client was looking for specialist Clerks of Works with strong heritage-experience backgrounds and who could demonstrate significant experience in working on listed buildings, including castle refurbishments and extensions. We were able to provide these required skill-sets quickly and had two Clerks of Works on their project within a matter of days.’
