We have been appointed by award-winning national practise, GSSArchitecture, to provide Independent Quality Inspections for Durham University’s famous Bishop Cosin’s Library alongside the main contractor Vest Construction Ltd.
The 17th century Grade II* listed building is undergoing major repair, internal restoration to the existing lime plaster walls with additional work on surrounding flat roof areas, and reception to Palace Green Library.
Cosin’s library which was built in 1669 on what is now the Palace Green World Heritage Site, adjacent to the medieval sandstone constructed Exchequer building – was home to more than 5,000 books collected by Bishop John Cosin, including the Shakespeare First Folio.
Since 1832, Cosin’s library has been run by Durham University as part of the University Library, and it was granted Designated status in 2005 as being of international importance. The University added further buildings, in the Victorian period and furthermore in 1966, to continue housing the growing number of titles added to the collections – the set of buildings is now known as Palace Green Library.
